I have tried to make up a list of places that you can go online to find equipment that may help you along on your backpacking trip.
The first one is REI. They have some good equipment and their prices are usually good. If you become a member you get 10% back after January 1 for the purchases the previous year that were regular priced merchandise. Membership fees are good for lifetime so you only have to pay once. I use my rebate each year to buy some of the food for my backpacking trips that I am planning the next year.
Campmor is a store out of New Jersey. They have a catalog that they will mail to you at your request and they will e-mail you to inform you when they have new items or having a sale. They have a variety of items and I have talked to their phone reps and they are very helpful and knowledgeable. Check them out.
L.L.Bean is a great place. They are out of Freeport, Maine. The best thing about them is that if you visit the store in Maine it is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The store is a wonderful place to see and visit. They are really into Fly Fishing.
If you are in the Dallas/ Fort Worth, Texas area a great place to obtain equipment, maps, and advice is Mountain Sports. Even if you are not in the area, I know that they would be glad to help you by shipping any items that you need. They carry all the major brands and the staff really knows their stuff. They are located at 2025 W. Pioneer Pkwy., Arlington, TX. Telephone number Metro (817) 461-4503.
Another great place in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area is Mountain Hideout. They will ship anything that you need to you.
Check out Penny Schwyn's site. Penny is out of Spokane, Washington. She runs a home based that is a full repair and custom sewing/design service. She also has her own line of accessories for white water rafters called Speciality Outdoors. Please look at the pictures of her work and of her lovely family. Please check out her world.
This is a company that makes the best hat ,in my opinion, in the world. I bought this hat at REI bacause my old hat had been on one too many backpacking trips. The hat I bought is called "The Adventure Hat". It is a really great hat. I have used it in the desert Southwest on a backpacking trip and it worked like a charm. I also use it around my farm to help keep the sun out of my eyes and off my neck. You have to look at their line and when you purchase one you will be singing their praises just like I am. I also called them and they were so helpful and friendly. The name of this great company is Sunday Afternoons. They are located at 280 E Hersey St. Suite 14, Ashland, Oregon 97520. Their phone number is 1-888-874-2642. Check out their web site for the different styles of hats.
Outdoor Provisions is a site that I like to surf. They are online and they have free shipping if you order $25.00 or more worth of stuff from them. They have a good selection to choose from. I think that you will like to use the very user friendly site that they have. Please check them out.
I will add new links as I locate them. If you know about a place that you think would be great here then please tell me about it. I will include it on this page. You can e-mail me at Pittypatt@aol.com.
